The Palm Forest of Vai
Just 20km west of Sitia lies a captivating sight in Crete: the renowned palm tree forest of Vai. This extraordinary backdrop sets the stage for one of the most enchanting swimming spots on the island.
Legend has it that the forest emerged from the date stones tossed by Egyptian soldiers, Saracen pirates, and King Mithridates's army. Whether or not you believe the tales, one thing is certain—you've discovered a truly magnificent gem in Crete. The presence of rare Phoenix Theofrasti palm trees, golden sands, and mesmerizing blue-green waters imbue Vai with an exotic ambiance.
An oasis in eastern Crete
Richtis Gorge
If you are looking for reasons to visit Sitia, the Richti gorge is definitely one of them. It is a small canyon whose beauty has nothing to envy to highly advertised exotic destinations. In the northern part of the prefecture of Lasithi, shortly after the village of Exo Mouliana, one will find the entrance to the gorge, specifically at the point where the arched bridge of Lachanas is located, while it ends at the rocky beach of the same name. The route will enchant you as the lush vegetation combined with the running waters and the picturesque bridges make up an enchanting landscape. Following the path you will also come across the waterfall of Richtis, in just 15-20 minutes, from where the gorge got its name. The Richti gorge is about 3km long and is about 25km from Sitia. The road to Richti's gorge is paved with cement, so it is easily accessible, but you need to be careful because it is quite narrow. At the end of the road you will find a free parking lot for your car.
